Spring into Summer; Summer into Fall. Here we are at Winter Solstice, and the time has come for another changing season. Even if you embrace the changes, effects will be felt. From cooler weather to darker, shorter days, change is happening all around us. Our bodies adjust just like the leaves on the trees. Have you considered what these changes do to you and your body?

Time Change

The time change doesn’t just alter the clock, it affects us too. The sun lowering earlier in the day adjusts our internal clock. We may feel off after a time change. Hunger earlier in the day occurs because of the setting sun. Adjustments in sleep patterns may occur because the shorter days have altered our internal clocks. Also with all these changes, the darker days may affect our normal Vitamin D levels from the sun, potentially impacting our overall health.

Weather Change

As the temperature cools, often we go outside less. That can affect our physical activity levels. This lessening of activity will affect our overall health. The weather also changes what produce will be available. It’s important to consider your nutritional needs during this time, especially if you find yourself lacking a certain aspect of a well-rounded diet.

Social Change

With the shorter days and cooler weather, it can be more difficult to go out and about to socialize. Many of us notice a change as winter arrives in our energy levels. With that, we often choose to isolate and opt out of socializing. The same goes for seniors. They may choose to socialize less because of the shorter days or the weather. This change in the social calendar can affect our mental health and eventually our physical health. It’s important to acknowledge this and combat any negative effects by acting.
