Physical activity is not only good for the body, but also critical in improving mental and cognitive health. It promotes a longer, fuller life where you can actively participate. Gerontologists state that successful aging includes spirituality, emotional and educational health, social satisfaction, and physical health. The primary goal is vitality, aiming for more life to the years.

So, we understand that physical activity is good for us. That’s not necessarily a new concept. Did you know that physical activity can be planned or incidental? You can choose to go to an exercise class. However, if you realize you have walked the wrong direction and now have to turn around to walk in the correct one – it is still physical activity. Research has found that any physical activity benefits the body. Let us make the mistake purposefully next time. Take that longer path – it’s good for you.

What’s that? You want to focus on physical activity with exercise?

There are several ways to exercise that will benefit you. As previously stated, all forms of exercise improve physiologic responses in all ages. Resistance training is a form of exercise that can be done with large rubber exercise bands, exercise balls, or even your own body weight. This type of exercise builds and maintains muscle mass. In addition, it also slows down the process of muscle loss that naturally occurs with aging. If resistance training doesn’t seem your speed, cardiovascular training may be your style. This is aerobic exercise where you are elevating your heart rate for an extended period of time. You can do this by walking or moving fast enough to increase your heart rate. In epidemiological studies, cardiorespiratory exercise has been seen to slow cognitive decline and dementia risks. The belief is that aerobic activity increases blood to the brain helping to delay the process of aging.

In conclusion, does this mean you need to start training for the next Richmond marathon? No. Does it mean consult your doctor about your personal physical activity routines and what would be best for you? Absolutely! As some say, motion is lotion.
