Recently, we discussed the Seven Dimensions of Wellness. Check out the previous blog if you want the whole story. However, if you want a quick recap: the seven dimensions of wellness are physical, emotional, intellectual, environmental, vocational, spiritual, and social. A balance of these dimensions can lead to a fuller, more satisfying life. Today, let’s focus on social wellness and socialization in Assisted Living environments.

Social Wellness and Assisted Living

In Assisted Living, there is undeniable community. A group of people near you. This community is there to support you if you need help, but they are also there to stave off any feelings of loneliness or isolation. Assisted living involves natural socialization. Research has linked socialization to improved mental health, increased sense of happiness, and even longer lifespans. Dr. Craig Sawchuk, a Mayo Clinic Psychologist, addresses just how important it is to surround ourselves with people; “we are social animals by nature, so we tend to function better when we’re in a community and being around others.” Other research related socialization with physiological benefits such as strengthened immune systems.

When discussing activities that benefit social wellness, they often fall into other dimensions of wellness too. For example: we are learning a new activity with others in our assisted living community. Not only are we promoting social wellness, but also we are placing emphasis on intellectual, vocational, and even emotional wellness. With one activity, we evoke a sense of belonging and purpose. These feelings come organically with Assisted Living, allowing residents to feel part of their community.
